It's 2 a.m. in the Strait of Hormuz, and your tanker has just switched off its transponder. On purpose. Under your boots: about 2 million barrels of Iranian crude that, on paper, don't exist.
Officially, China imported zero barrels of oil from Iran. Yet in March 2025 it bought a record 2.03 million barrels a day from Malaysia, a country that produces nowhere near that much. This is how that trick works, told from the inside, one cargo at a time.
You'll follow the oil from the first commercial oil strike in the Middle East at Masjed Soleyman in 1908, through the onshore fields of Khuzestan (where most of Iran's oil really comes from), to Kharg Island, the shadow fleet's dark run through Hormuz, a ship-to-ship transfer off Johor where the oil changes nationality, and a Shandong "teapot" refinery. Then the 2026 strikes on Kharg and the US naval blockade put the whole machine to the test.
And no, this oil does not go to the USA: Washington has banned Iranian crude since 1987.
