ZZ Top sold their songs and royalty income, but kept their name. The trademark paperwork reveals why those were separate deals, and who held the name first. Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard looked like three Texans who owned the whole operation. For twenty years, however, the federal ZZ Top trademark was registered to their manager's company. Bill Ham helped build the sound, the mystery and the business. When the partnership ended, the band had to bring its own name back across the table. The February 2007 assignment shows exactly what changed hands. The economics of ZZ Top split into four assets: songs, recordings, royalty income and the name. Eliminator made the beards and the red coupe instantly recognizable, but recognition did not put every right in the musicians' hands. Behind La Grange, Tush and Sharp Dressed Man sat publishing agreements, record-label contracts and a brand that could sell everything from concert tickets to Tres Hombres whisky. In December 2021, BMG and KKR bought the band's publishing catalogue and its income from recorded and performance royalties. That announcement did not say they bought the studio masters or the band name. KKR held its interest through Chord Music Partners, then agreed to sell its Chord stake to Dundee Partners and Universal Music Group in 2024. Follow the separate transactions and one familiar band becomes a very different business: the music can change hands while the name carries on. Whether you're here for the money, the music business, or ZZ Top, this documentary-style money autopsy follows the ownership to where it actually ended up.
