IELTS Speaking Phrases That Sound Band 9: Get Seasick, Snap at Him, Bite My Tongue

IELTS Speaking Part 1 with ten new everyday questions: boats, sunglasses, jokes, collecting things, flowers, concerts, haircuts, patience, text messages and time alone. For each question the examiner asks, and one candidate answers twice with the same story, first at Band 7 and then at Band 9, side by side on screen, with the plain phrase and the Band 9 phrase marked. Then a teacher explains the one move that lifts the answer, a different one every time: naming a feeling exactly (I get seasick), ranking two reasons (first and foremost, that said), a cleft sentence for emphasis (what I'm terrible at is), linking a past story with the past perfect, joining a comparison with whereas, fixed phrases for an atmosphere (the atmosphere was electric), the causative (get it cut), a different phrase for each reaction instead of angry twice, conditions with unless, as long as and just in case, and saying what something does for you (recharge my batteries). The questions and answers are original, written for this video, not taken from a Cambridge book. How to practise with this video 1. Pause after each question and give your own answer out loud before the candidate speaks. 2. Listen to the Band 7 answer and guess which phrase Band 9 will change, then check on screen. 3. Choose one move from the teacher, such as unless or a cleft sentence, and use it in three answers today.
