The man in Velázquez’s 1650 portrait was enslaved by the painter. A document signed in the same year promised freedom four years later. Juan de Pareja would become a painter in his own right. This episode follows the portrait, the emancipation chronology, and Pareja’s 1661 The Calling of Saint Matthew to ask what a famous image can reveal—and what lies beyond its frame.
