Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides)

Dawn redwood is cone-bearing conifer that is also deciduous. It's feathery, soft green foliage turns orange to reddish brown before falling off for the dormant season. With its strong pyramidal form, remarkable bark and unusual branch attachments, dawn redwood is a great tree for year-round interest in a landscape. Its hardy from zones 4 through 8 and is well-suited to tolerate wet growing conditions. At one time, scientists believed this tree to be extinct, but an immensely successful effort to regrow the dawn redwood population means it's now a common tree in North American landscapes.
