Warner Bros. held the live-action Akira rights from 2002 until they lapsed last year. In that time the project went through 6 directors, drew an eight-figure spend, and never made it to camera. George Miller and Jordan Peele were both offered it and passed. Meanwhile the film they were chasing was made for about 5 and a half million dollars, on over 160,000 hand-painted animation cels, with most of its runtime set at night, which is the expensive choice in hand-drawn animation. In this breakdown I look at what Hollywood was trying to option, why money was never going to close the gap, and the production decision almost nobody talks about: Akira recorded its dialogue before it animated the mouths, which is believed to be a first for an anime production. I work in visual effects on features, so this is the view from someone who does the expensive modern version of what this film did by hand. For Australian and New Zealand viewers: our 4K IMAX run was the 2nd and 3rd of May, one weekend only. The US and Canada run starts the 4th of September.
