Raised in Chicago, playing organ in his father's church as a boy, he settled in Los Angeles in 1937 and formed the King Cole Trio with guitar and bass but no drums - a lineup so influential that both Oscar Peterson and Ahmad Jamal built on it. His playing is a model of restraint: spare, perfectly placed single-note lines with a harmonic sophistication that pointed straight toward bebop. "Straighten Up and Fly Right" was the trio's 1943 breakthrough, and hits such as "Route 66" followed before the ballads and orchestras took over his career. Pianists return to Cole precisely because he never overplays; every note counts, and his sense of swing at a medium tempo is close to perfect. Lean, horn-like single-note lines with a light touch and immaculate time, punctuated by crisp block chords and quick fills. Sparse left hand - often just a rootless chord stab, since bass and guitar cover the rest. Medium swing, blues inflection, generous space. 🎹 TURN ANY PIANO RECORDING INTO MIDI Want to learn this piece — or any recording — with falling notes like in this video?
