Andhra Pradesh Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu has strongly responded to YSRCP criticism over the Veligonda Project and compensation for displaced families. Nimmala alleged that the previous YSRCP government failed to pay adequate funds to project evacuees and did not focus on completing the rehabilitation process during its five-year tenure. He said the present government is now paying ₹910 crore in compensation, along with an additional ₹169 crore for eligible beneficiaries whose names were not included in the original award. The minister also said women among the displaced families would be honoured with sarees, turmeric and kumkum. Meanwhile, Veligonda project evacuees have been protesting near the Markapuram Collectorate, alleging that villages are being evacuated without completing compensation and rehabilitation colonies. During the protest, an evacuee from Sunkesula village reportedly attempted self-immolation, but MLA Kandula Narayana Reddy intervened and stopped him, assuring the protesters that justice would be done. Nimmala Ramanaidu also announced that despite 2019 being fixed as the cut-off date, the Chief Minister has directed officials to provide ₹2 lakh ex-gratia to eligible displaced youth who turned 18 after the cut-off date.
