In 1953, Dorothy Dandridge was told she was far too much of a lady to play Carmen. The next day she walked back in with her hair loose, a blouse off one shoulder, and a whole new arrival. It made her the first Black woman ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. Hollywood had no makeup made for her skin. So she made her own way. A red and an orange lipstick blended into her famous coral. A brown pencil dot placed high on the cheekbone. A pancake base mixed darker after MGM filmed her too light. Short curls her sister Vivian set so they lifted off her neck. Gowns from Zelda Wynn Valdes on Broadway and 158th Street. Every one of these is a decision, not a purchase. That is why they still work tonight, on the lipstick, the dress and the hair you already own. Number two is the afternoon she changed everything about how she arrived, and the moment a director said: "My God, it's Carmen." 💬 Tell me in the comments: which of these 12 is already sitting on your dresser? And what is the one thing you have been told was "not for you"? I read every one. 🔔 Subscribe for more lost beauty methods from the Black women who came before us. #dorothydandridge #blackhistory #blackbeauty #vintagebeauty #blackhollywood
