While I was in Hawaii a couple of years back, I decided to head up Koko Head late one day. This is consists of 1,048 steps over 0.6 miles.
Unfortunately, it was late in the day and it was getting dark quickly. A lot of things were greying out and I was having problems with depth perception due to the low light. I'd experienced that once before on the Bright Angel Trail in the Grand Canyon in similar circumstances. Deciding it wasn't safe for me to continue on, I descended the trail.
I wish I had gotten back to hike to the summit.
The Koko Head railway, known as the Koko Crater Tramway, was constructed by the U.S. military during World War II, specifically around 1942–1943.
