How did ancient Egyptians survive the heat, and actually sleep, in 40°C desert summers with no air conditioning, no fans and no ice? The answer is a complete cooling system built from mud, wind, water and stone.
In this video, we explore daily life in ancient Egypt after dark: why dry desert air made evaporation a powerful free cooling machine, how thick mud brick walls held back the afternoon heat, and how the malqaf wind catcher pulled the north wind down into homes. We look at porous clay water jars, why many Egyptians slept on their roofs, what the Greek historian Herodotus wrote about sleeping in towers and under fishing nets, and why a hard wooden headrest may have been smarter than your pillow.
We also test a famous modern trick, the "Egyptian method" of sleeping under a damp sheet, and ask whether the ancient Egyptians ever really used it. Plus, why modern architects are now returning to these same ancient engineering ideas for passive cooling.
