Laleli’s lively commercial life today is part of a story that goes back centuries. The neighborhood became closely associated with the Laleli Mosque and its complex, commissioned by Sultan Mustafa III in the 18th century. Built in the 1760s, the complex included not only a mosque but also a bazaar, shops, inns and other buildings. From its early days, Laleli grew into a bustling center where worship, accommodation and trade came together.
Laleli’s rise as an international textile hub gathered pace in the late 1980s and 1990s. As Turkey’s manufacturing and exports grew, clothing made in Istanbul began reaching more markets abroad. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, traders from Russia and other former Soviet countries came to Laleli to buy textiles and clothing to sell back home. This trade, often known as “suitcase trade,” became a defining part of Laleli’s streets and business life.
Today, Laleli is home to textile and clothing shops, hotels, logistics businesses and many companies serving customers from different countries. As you watch shopkeepers move boxes and visitors shop along the busy streets, you can feel that Laleli is more than a place to shop: it is a story of trade connecting Istanbul with the world.
