Istanbul’s Aksaray district is one of the city’s most central and lively areas. In this video, we take an evening walk through Aksaray during the busy after-work hours. I remember Aksaray from my childhood as a cleaner, more orderly, classic central Istanbul neighborhood. Of course, people from Anatolia, families moving from other Turkish cities, and visitors coming for trade were always part of the area. But walking through Aksaray today, you encounter a very different side of Istanbul. People from Turkey and many parts of the world live, work, and socialize here. Restaurants from different countries, döner shops, chicken rotisserie restaurants, hotels, small local businesses, and signs in many languages stand side by side. On some streets, it can feel as if you are walking through another country rather than the very center of Istanbul. Aksaray’s central location, easy access to public transportation, affordable accommodation, older apartment buildings, and busy commercial life have all shaped this transformation. In recent years, it has become both a temporary stop and a place to live and work for many people. Old Istanbul apartment buildings and buildings awaiting renewal stand alongside newer hotels and constantly changing shops. In this 4K walking tour, I recorded Aksaray’s after-work crowds, traffic, street food, and multicultural everyday life as it is. As someone who had not walked these streets for many years, I was also surprised by how much the area has changed.
