“Beneath the Altar” is a powerful, solemn biblical prophecy song centered on the opening of the fifth seal. After the thunder of the horsemen, the scene shifts from the earth to Heaven. Beneath the altar are the souls of those who remained faithful to the Word of God even when that faith cost them their lives. Their bodies were silenced, but their testimony was not.
The heart of the song comes from their cry: “How long, O Lord, holy and true?” These faithful witnesses may have been forgotten by the world, but Heaven has forgotten none of them. Some stood before kings. Some died unseen. Some had nothing left but the name of Jesus on their lips. Yet when given the choice between preserving their lives and abandoning their faith, they held fast.
Then the song turns toward the promise given to them. White robes are given, and they are told to rest a little longer. Their tears are remembered. Their wounds are known. Their sacrifice has not disappeared into history. Before the throne of God, every faithful witness is known.
As part of “When The Seven Seals Break,” this song marks a dramatic change in the journey. The first four seals brought the horsemen. The fifth reveals the faithful beneath the altar, waiting for justice and crying out for the day when every wrong will finally be answered.
You can burn the pages, but not the Word.
You can kill the witness, but not the truth.
You can break the body, but not the soul.

BENEATH THE ALTAR
The fifth seal opened
And heaven heard
The voices of the faithful
Who died for the Word
No grave could silence
No sword could erase
The testimony written
In blood and grace
Beneath the altar, voices rise
Beyond the reach of earthly lies
The ones who stood when others fled
The ones who kept the faith instead
They faced the fire, they faced the blade
Yet would not bow, would not betray
Their bodies fell beneath the sword
But still their souls cried to the Lord
No monuments may bear their names
No history may tell their pain
But heaven knows where each one stood
And every drop of faithful blood
They lost the world
But kept the faith
They closed their eyes
And saw His face
Beneath the altar
Hear their voices rise
“How long, O Lord, holy and true
Till justice fills the skies?”
Beneath the altar
They wait before the throne
The world may have forgotten them
But heaven knows its own
They gave their lives
They held the line
They kept the faith
Until they died
Beneath the altar
Their testimony cries
Some stood alone before the kings
Some died where no one heard them sing
Some whispered Jesus with their breath
And held His name in face of death
They could have traded truth for life
Could have escaped the flame and knife
But what is life if faith is sold?
What good is breath without the soul?
So one by one they faced the night
Still holding to eternal Light
And when the darkness took their breath
Their testimony conquered death
They lost the world
But kept the faith
They closed their eyes
And saw His face
Beneath the altar
Hear their voices rise
“How long, O Lord, holy and true
Till justice fills the skies?”
Beneath the altar
They wait before the throne
The world may have forgotten them
But heaven knows its own
They gave their lives
They held the line
They kept the faith
Until they died
Beneath the altar
Their testimony cries
White robes were given
One by one
To those who suffered
For the Son
“Rest a little longer
The hour is drawing near
Others still will join you
Who hold their witness dear”
Not one forgotten
Not one unknown
Not one abandoned
Before the throne
Every tear remembered
Every wound is known
Every faithful witness
Is finally home
You could burn the pages
But not the Word
You could kill the witness
But truth was heard
You could break the body
But not the soul
The Lamb remembers
Every name you stole
Beneath the altar
Hear their voices rise
“How long, O Lord, holy and true
Till justice fills the skies?”
Beneath the altar
In robes of shining white
They wait upon the promise
That every wrong is made right
They gave their lives
They held the line
Their testimony
Still survives
Beneath the altar
The faithful are alive
Rest a little longer
The answer soon will come
For heaven has heard the question
“How long
O Lord
How long?”
