Wendy's closed 289 restaurants in the United States in the first six months of 2026, on the company's own figures. Roughly three every two days. And Wendy's is not bankrupt — no court ordered it and no lender forced it. The company picked out hundreds of its own restaurants and decided it was better off without them.
At the end of 2025 there were 5,969 Wendy's in America. By the end of June there were 5,724. The program is called Project Fresh, and the target was to close 5–6% of the entire US system — one restaurant in every twenty — on top of 140 closures announced in 2024.
The reason is that the customers stopped coming. US same-restaurant sales fell 11.3% in the last quarter of 2025, 7.8% in the first quarter of 2026 and 7% in the second. Six quarters of decline in a row. Traffic in the second quarter was down 12.5% — one customer in eight, gone — while the average check went up 5.6%.
In the same quarter McDonald's was up 0.8% and Burger King was up 8.5%. In August, Burger King took back second place among US burger chains, a position Wendy's had held since 2020.
Then the new chief executive, Bob Wright, said the part executives rarely say out loud: decisions made "in the interest of cost and efficiency" had degraded the quality. In his words, "our quality differentiation has eroded, our value proposition has weakened." He withdrew the 2026 financial outlook, cut the dividend in half, and said the full turnaround plan would come in November.
And the part most customers have never been told: Wendy's does not own most Wendy's. In September, Meritage Hospitality Group — 314 restaurants across 15 states, around 9,000 employees, widely described as the chain's largest franchisee — filed for Chapter 11 after its restaurant earnings fell 48% in a single year.
Also covered: the square patty and what it was supposed to mean, the 2024 "dynamic pricing" backlash, record beef prices, why franchisees are cutting breakfast, four people in the top job in just over two years, a stock down around 65% in five years, the other chains closing hundreds of restaurants in 2026, and how to tell whether the Wendy's near you is next.
Has a Wendy's near you closed this year? Tell me the town and the state in the comments — and if you still go, tell me what you order and what it costs you now.
Note: Wendy's remains profitable and is not in bankruptcy. Gift cards and app rewards are unaffected. Restaurants owned by a franchisee in Chapter 11 stay open while it restructures.
