Canada has just completed one of British Columbia's most impressive underground engineering achievements — a massive 9-kilometre tunnel carved beneath a mountain and a protected coastal estuary.
Deep beneath the rugged landscape of Squamish, British Columbia, engineers used two enormous tunnel boring machines to excavate through nearly 5 kilometres of hard rock and 3.9 kilometres of soft ground.
But why did Canada need to build such an extraordinary tunnel?
The answer lies in the Eagle Mountain–Woodfibre Gas Pipeline Project, a major infrastructure development connecting Canada's natural gas network to the Woodfibre LNG export facility on the Pacific coast.
In September 2026, engineers achieved a major breakthrough, connecting two separately excavated tunnel sections into one continuous underground passage.
In this documentary, we explore the incredible engineering behind Canada's 9 KM mega tunnel, the challenges of tunnelling beneath Monmouth Mountain, the importance of protecting the Squamish Estuary, and the role this project could play in Canada's energy export industry.
Discover how modern tunnel boring machines, advanced engineering, and years of planning made this ambitious Canadian megaproject possible.
From enormous underground machines to the stunning coastal mountains of British Columbia, this is the story of an engineering achievement hidden deep beneath Canada's landscape.
