To them, this would have been shocking, and they naturally ask when these things will happen and what signs they should look for. Instead of giving them a detailed timeline, however, Jesus tells them not to be alarmed. Rather than fixing their attention on dates and signs, Jesus teaches them how they should live. He warns them of future suffering and persecution, but also tells them to see these trials as opportunities to bear witness and proclaim the gospel. Ultimately, Jesus calls his followers to endure to the end. In a world marked by uncertainty, conflict and suffering, Mark 13:1–13 gives Christians remarkably practical instructions for how we should live: do not be alarmed, be on your guard, and endure to the end.
