THE BACKSTREET SAINTS — YOU CAN KEEP THE KEY British R&B / Early Rock & Roll / British Invasion The Backstreet Saints return with their second imaginary album, YOU CAN KEEP THE KEY. Their first record, No Money After Midnight, followed five young men through a weekend of cheap drinks, missed trains, empty pockets and police lights. This time, the trouble is closer to home. A key left on a table. A girl who moves in without asking. Five shillings missing from the rent. An old girlfriend with a better-dressed new boyfriend. A room above a café. A lie on Monday morning. And one light left burning through the night. The Saints are a little more streetwise now — but not much wiser. They still have no money, very little sense, and far too much pride. Musically, YOU CAN KEEP THE KEY keeps the raw sound of their debut: two dry low-output electric guitars, short chord stabs, brief double-stop replies, compact flatwound bass, a small loose drum kit, occasional upright piano and harmonica, and a thin, cocky young British lead vocal recorded in narrow mono. The guitars rarely play long solos. The bass sometimes moves ahead of the beat. The snare sits slightly behind the guitars. Nobody plays more than they need to. The result is less about polished musicianship and more about five young men trying to turn imported American R&B records into something of their own. The Saints are still broke, still wandering the same streets, and still incapable of admitting when anything actually hurts. The title track sets the tone. A relationship is over, the key has been returned, and the singer insists that he could not care less — until he quietly admits that he came back at three in the morning and tried the key anyway. From there, the album moves through rented rooms, unpaid bills, cheap clothes, jealousy, excuses and badly managed Saturday nights. SHE MOVED IN ON TUESDAY turns domestic chaos into comedy, while FIVE SHILLINGS SHORT follows a desperate attempt to borrow just enough money to pay the rent. DON’T SAY HER NAME is built around a contradiction: the singer demands that nobody mention his former girlfriend while being completely incapable of talking about anything else. GOOD SHOES, BAD INTENTIONS may be the clearest picture of the band themselves — badly behaved young men trying to look respectable for one evening. Side A ends with ROOM ABOVE THE CAFÉ, one of the quietest songs the Saints have recorded. For once, nothing much happens. That is precisely the point. Side B brings the bravado back. YOUR NEW BOY’S GOT MONEY is jealousy disguised as indifference. SATURDAY ON CREDIT finds the band spending money they do not have. THE GIRL FROM NUMBER NINE introduces a neighbour nobody quite understands. I WASN’T THERE is three minutes of increasingly unbelievable denial. MONDAY MORNING LIAR turns workplace excuses into a running joke. And then comes I LEFT THE LIGHT ON. No confession. No reconciliation. No grand ending. Just an empty room, a bare bulb, and one final sentence: “I left the light on. That’s all.” THE BACKSTREET SAINTS are a fictional British R&B group created for Parallel Beat Archives.
