Rwandan genocide justice campaigner Dafroza Mukarumongi Gauthier was laid to rest on October 12, 2026, in Reims, northeastern France, where she had lived with her family.
The farewell ceremony began at Saint-André Church in Reims and was attended by members of her family, friends, officials and people whose lives were touched by her decades-long pursuit of truth, remembrance and justice.
Rwanda’s Ambassador to France, François Nkulikiyimfura, delivered a message of condolence from President Paul Kagame on behalf of the Government of Rwanda, the Rwandan people and the President personally.
President Kagame paid tribute to Dafroza’s courage and unwavering commitment to fighting impunity for perpetrators of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. He said she would remain in the hearts of Rwandans because of the more than three decades she devoted to restoring dignity to genocide victims and survivors.
The President extended his condolences to her husband and longtime partner in the pursuit of justice, Alain Gauthier, their children, relatives, friends and everyone who had the opportunity to work alongside her.
Dafroza was born in the former Butare Prefecture in 1954. She later met Alain Gauthier when he was working as a teacher in Rwanda, and the couple eventually settled in France, where they raised three children.
The 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi claimed approximately 80 members of Dafroza’s family. That immense personal loss became a driving force behind her commitment to ensuring that genocide suspects living in France would not escape justice.
Dafroza and Alain began their justice campaign in 1996. In 2001, they founded the Collectif des Parties Civiles pour le Rwanda—CPCR—which investigated the presence of genocide suspects in France, collected evidence and testimonies, and submitted cases to the relevant judicial authorities.
In recognition of their exceptional service to justice and remembrance, President Paul Kagame awarded Dafroza and Alain Gauthier Rwanda’s Igihango National Order of Outstanding Friendship on November 18, 2017.
President Kagame stressed that Dafroza’s legacy will continue through the work of CPCR and through the example she leaves for present and future generations of Rwandans.
May Dafroza Mukarumongi Gauthier rest in eternal peace.
