*RWANDA EXPLAINS RECENT POWER OUTAGES AND OUTLINES ITS 2029 ELECTRICITY PLAN* Rwanda Energy Group has addressed concerns over intermittent electricity shortages reported in different parts of the country, as Members of Parliament questioned the institution about the reliability of Rwanda’s power supply. REG officials attributed part of the disruption to reduced water levels caused by a prolonged dry season. Rwanda still relies on hydropower as one of the sources supporting its national electricity system, meaning that significant changes in rainfall and water availability can affect production. Beyond the immediate shortage, the discussions focused on Rwanda’s longer-term strategy to strengthen electricity generation, improve the national grid and reduce the risk of future interruptions. The country plans to increase its available generation capacity from approximately 470 megawatts to around 670 megawatts by 2029. Officials also reaffirmed the national objective of expanding electricity access to all Rwandan households by that year. Rwanda is simultaneously exploring additional energy sources to support its growing population, industrial development, modern cities and expanding economy. These include regional electricity projects, renewable energy and longer-term nuclear energy ambitions. However, nuclear energy remains a developing national programme whose implementation will require detailed technical studies, financing, specialised infrastructure, regulatory preparation and strict international safety standards. Its projected contribution should therefore be understood as part of Rwanda’s long-term energy planning rather than an immediate solution to current electricity shortages.
