A divine offering to Goddess Meenakshi, the Fish-Eyed Mother of Madurai! Composed by Sri Adi Shankaracharya, this sacred stotra paints her radiant form, cosmic glory, and boundless compassion. May the ocean of her grace remove all fears, bestow wisdom, and fill your heart with peace and devotion. Chant along and feel her presence!
Meenakshi Pancharatnam (मीनाक्षी पञ्चरत्नम्) is a beautiful five-verse devotional hymn (stotram) composed by Sri Adi Shankaracharya. It is a glowing tribute to Goddess Meenakshi (Meenakshi Amman), the fish-eyed divine consort of Lord Shiva (as Sundareswara) at the famous Meenakshi Temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.
Mother Meenakshi is revered as an incarnation of Parvati/Shakti — the supreme feminine power — embodying compassion, beauty, wisdom, and protection.
“Pancharatnam” means “Five Jewels/Gems,” referring to the five exquisite verses that describe her divine form, cosmic attributes, and spiritual glory.
Each verse ends with the powerful refrain: “मीनाक्षीं प्रणतोऽस्मि संततमहं कारुण्यवारांनिधिम्” (mīnākṣīṁ praṇato’smi santatamahaṁ kāruṇyavārāṁnidhim) → “I constantly bow to Meenakshi, the ocean of compassion.”
Chanting or listening to this stotra is believed to invoke her grace for fearlessness, knowledge, fulfillment of desires, removal of obstacles, and ultimate spiritual liberation. It blends bhakti (devotion) with elements of Sri Vidya (tantric worship of the Divine Mother) and Advaita philosophy.
Verse 1
I constantly bow to Meenakshi, the ocean of compassion — who shines with the brilliance of a thousand crore rising suns, radiant with armlets and necklaces, whose lips are red like the bimba fruit, whose smiling rows of teeth are enchanting, who is adorned in yellow garments, whose lotus feet are served by Vishnu, Brahma, and Indra (king of gods), who is the very embodiment of Supreme Truth (tattva-svarupa) and the auspicious One (Shiva).
Verse 2
I constantly bow to Meenakshi, the ocean of compassion — adorned with a pearl necklace and a shining crown, whose face glows like the full moon, who wears anklets with tinkling bells and gem-studded ornaments, radiant with lotus-like splendour, the giver of all desired fruits, the daughter of the Mountain (Girija/Parvati), worshipped by Vani (Saraswati) and Rama (Lakshmi).
Verse 3
I constantly bow to Meenakshi, the ocean of compassion — the embodiment of Sri Vidya, residing on the left side of Shiva, shining with the sacred Hreemkara mantra, dwelling in the central bindu of the Sri Chakra, the glorious Queen of the divine assembly (Sabhanayaki), mother of the six-faced Kartikeya (Shanmukha) and Ganesha (Vighnaraja), and the enchanting enchantress of the entire world.
Verse 4
I constantly bow to Meenakshi, the ocean of compassion — the auspicious and beautiful Queen (Sundara Nayaki), remover of all fear, bestower of supreme knowledge, pure and stainless, of dark-blue complexion, whose feet are worshipped by the lotus-seated Brahma, the younger sister of Narayana (Vishnu), lover of the music of veena, flute, and mridangam, the Divine Mother in her countless forms (Ambikā).
Verse 5
I constantly bow to Meenakshi, the ocean of compassion — who resides in the hearts of countless yogis and great sages, who grants various spiritual powers (siddhis), whose lotus feet are adorned with diverse flowers, who is worshipped by Narayana (Vishnu), who is the very form of Nada-Brahma (the primordial cosmic sound), the Supreme of the Supreme, and the essence of all cosmic principles (tattvas).
