Battling fires and traffic chaos - Marano Lagunare - Drive from Cortina to Trieste

This video covers a big travel day from Cortina d'Ampezzo to Trieste via Marano Lagunare. It's a 246 km trip that involved 4 hrs and 30 minutes of driving. We drive the SS51 and travel from mountains to the coast, through spectacular scenery, First leg was 169 km and 2 1/2 hirs from Cortina d'Ampezzo to Marano Lagunare, a small fishing town on the Adriatic Sea. Marano Lagunare is a comune in the Province of Udine in the Italian region Friuli-Venezia Giulia, located about 50 kilometres northwest of Trieste. Its population is only around 1,800 people. It was settled by the Romans and controlled by the Venetians for many centuries. It sits in the Marano Lagoon and the delta of a number of rivers including the River Stella. It gives the impression of a less developed Venice and no tourists. Things to see in Marano include: Torre Millenaria Canals and fishing boats Main square and narrow medieval streets Nature reserve Sadly it was just too hot (39c) to venture out to the nearby nature reserve. After a nice seafood lunch we headed to Trieste. A 50 km 1 hr trip turned into a 2 hr trip due to forest fires and diversions. Instead of travelling on the A4 and E70 we stayed on the lesser SS14 the whole way to Trieste. There was plenty of smoke and ash at times - needles to say there was traffic chaos as one of the main routes from central Italy to the rest of Europe was shut down.
