One blue wine bottle, three prints worth comparing, and nine years between her first look and her last. Watch the State's print examiner walk the jury through all of it.
Summer Maffett has spent her career at the North Carolina State Crime Lab reading the ridges of fingers and palms. In the Faith Hedgepeth murder trial in Durham County, the State called her to tell the jury whose prints are on the blue Riesling bottle. Faith was a 19-year-old UNC student when she was killed in her Chapel Hill apartment in September 2012. The defendant is on trial on the charges, and he is presumed innocent. Her testimony runs across Day 5 and Day 6, and this video is every minute of it the jury heard, the breaks taken out.
Follow the years. In 2012 her lab finds ridge detail on a Bacardi bottle, but nothing anyone can compare. In 2014 the blue bottle arrives, and Faith and her roommate, Karena Rosario, are checked against it. In 2021 and again in 2023 the defendant's known prints reach her lab. Then watch the defense, Mr. Murphy, go after what was never photographed and what a print can never tell you. Twice the jury is sent out of the room, and you hear her answers while they were gone.
Here is what I want you to sit with. She agreed there is no way to know when a print was left on an object, or in what order. One fingerprint on that bottle is still unidentified. The Bacardi bottle's ridge detail was never photographed, and she said, "There is a chance it could degrade over the years." So as you watch, ask yourself what a print on a bottle proves and what it leaves open. I'll tell you where I think she landed at the end, but we're not the jury. Only the jurors decide.
