Southern California is bracing for five days of exceptionally high tides that could flood coastal homes, roads and businesses from Los Angeles to San Diego. As of October 25, 2026, coastal flood warnings are in effect for Orange and San Diego counties, with the highest tides expected Monday through Wednesday. Even without powerful surf, elevated water levels could push onto streets and threaten vulnerable coastal neighborhoods.
The threat comes as communities are still recovering from damaging ocean swells earlier this month. Along the Long Beach Peninsula, sections of a century-old boardwalk were destroyed and several buildings were red-tagged. Officials and residents are reinforcing vulnerable beaches with sand, sandbags and temporary berms, while Newport Beach and Seal Beach prepare for another round of high water.
In this video, we examine the coastal flood warnings, the damage and recovery efforts in Long Beach, the sand barriers being built in nearby beach communities, and the suspension of part of Metrolink's Orange County Line. We also explain how unusually warm ocean water and El Niño-related Kelvin waves can contribute to higher coastal water levels.
The immediate danger is flooding from elevated tides, even where waves remain relatively small. Forecasters are also watching for stronger surf later in the week, while higher astronomical tides around Thanksgiving and Christmas could bring additional pressure to already vulnerable beaches. Drivers are urged to obey road closures and never enter floodwater.
Global Weather covers natural disasters and extreme weather events as they develop, using sourced reporting and avoiding unsupported speculation.
