If God Is Love, Why Does the Bible Tell Us to Fear Him?

If God is love, why does the Bible tell us to fear Him? Christians often know both statements: “perfect love casts out fear” and “fear the Lord.” In this Bible study, we put those passages together instead of weakening either side. We examine 1 John 4, Romans 8, Exodus 20, Matthew 10, Proverbs, Psalm 130, Acts 9, 1 Peter 1, Hebrews 12, Philippians 2, and other key texts to ask what kind of fear Scripture rejects and what kind it commends. We also look at how fear of God relates to assurance, holiness, courage, repentance, spiritual abuse, anxiety, worship, and the gospel. The goal is not to make Christians afraid of an unpredictable God, nor to reduce the fear of the Lord to casual respect.
