Fall asleep to the story of the Kellogg family of Battle Creek, Michigan, two brothers born 8 years apart in a broom maker's house who both lived to 91. In 1894 a batch of boiled wheat left standing overnight in the Battle Creek Sanitarium's kitchen came off the rollers as flakes, and patent No. 558,393 carried only the doctor's name. On February 19, 1906, at 46, his younger brother Will Keith Kellogg founded the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company and signed every box in red. In 1910 both brothers went to court over the Kellogg name, and in 1920 the Michigan Supreme Court ruled for Will. In 1941 the doctor wrote that he earnestly desired to make amends, yet the letter did not reach his brother until 1948. So why did it take 7 years to arrive?

In this video, we talk about how one family name came between two brothers, including the broom shop where Will worked from age 6, the frail boy at the church's type case, brooms sold as far as Dallas, the Western Health Reform Institute and its 12 rooms, a day by the Sanitarium's printed program at $14 a week, the doctor in white and his 42 foster children, the bookkeeper hurrying behind the bicycle, the dough left standing overnight, the fire at 3:48 a.m. on February 18, 1902, the quarrel over sugar, the red signature and the Times Square sign, the ten years in court, grandson Kenneth and the Ann J. Kellogg School, the ovens that ran three shifts through the night, John Leonard Kellogg and All-Bran, the motor bus called the Ark, the Tudor cottage at Gull Lake, the Arabian horses at Pomona, the doctor's last letter, the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, and the two brothers at rest on Oak Hill.
