The WALK Bridge Replacement Project is a massive, multi-year infrastructure initiative led by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) to replace the deteriorating Norwalk River Railroad Bridge (locally known as the "Walk Bridge").
The total cost of the programmatic upgrades is estimated at nearly $1.6 billion.
Construction officially began in May 2023 and is projected to conclude around 2030 or 2031.
The Problem: Why It’s Being Replaced.
Built in 1896, the original 564-foot four-track swing bridge is one of the oldest movable rail bridges in the country.
Critical Transit Link: It serves as a vital bottleneck on the Northeast Corridor (NEC), carrying roughly 200 Amtrak, Metro-North, and freight trains—and over 125,000 passengers—every single day.
Operational Failures: As a single movable span with aging mechanisms, the bridge frequently gets physically stuck while pivoting open for maritime traffic.
When it fails to close properly, rail traffic halts completely, cascading into catastrophic delays between Boston, New York, and Washington D.C.
The Solution: The New Bridge Design.
Unlike the old rotating swing bridge, the new structure will be a state-of-the-art, multi-span vertical lift bridge.
