The Absolute Worst Fictional World to Live In

A mysterious cylinder lands in Surrey, and curious spectators gather to watch it open. Within moments, a Martian heat ray turns a familiar English landscape into a killing ground. This episode examines the psychological horror of H. G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds: the discovery that humanity’s weapons, institutions, and presumed superiority offer little protection against a more powerful species. Towering fighting machines, poisonous black smoke, and humans harvested for blood transform everyday life into a struggle to escape. Wells’s invasion also turns the violence of empire against Victorian Britain, forcing readers to imagine being conquered by a technologically superior power. As the narrator flees toward London, the curate’s breakdown and the artilleryman’s survival fantasies expose the mental strain of a collapsing society. The episode follows that fear through the adaptations of 1938, 1953, and 2005 before examining an unsettling conclusion: humanity survives because Earth’s bacteria accomplish what its armies cannot. pplpod is a biography and history podcast about the people, places, and moments that shaped our world.
