Tunstall Forest And Blaxhall Common - Suffolk Circular Walk

Quite often we have driven past Tunstall forest and surrounding area, so today we decided it was time to explore on foot. We were so glad we did as it was one of the best walks we've done this year. Tunstall Forest is a commercial forest planted by the Forestry Commission in the 1930. Obviously, the majority of the original trees have been felled, and today there is a mixture of very impressive tree plantations and heathland. The forest and heathland, is a thriving habitat for many mammals and birds. Tunstall Common is another great habitat for plants and animals and, along with Blaxhall Common, is a rare example of the Suffolk Sandlings - a lowland heath that once covered much of east Suffolk. And the Sandlings Trail, is one that we often dip in and out of whilst walking in Suffolk. Blaxhall Common is an ancient landscape with an Iron Age burial mound. The villagers of Blaxhall have a commoners' right to graze animals and take turf for fuel. Some of the ditches across the Common were dug out during WW2 to prevent enemy gliders from landing. The common is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest, managed by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust, and also provides a habitat for many species of plant, fungi and animals. Due to the the forest and commons stretching over many miles, we met very few people. The area is popular for dog walking, horse riding, mountain biking and of course, general walking/hiking. We absolutely loved the walk and didn't mind getting lost as it gave us an opportunity to explore more of the area. What we really enjoyed was the variety of paths we took, through forest, heath and open countryside. We would definitely recommend and will most certainly return to explore more.
