If you're a veteran with no dependents, or you help one, Aid and Attendance can pay up to $29,093 a year toward care at home or in assisted living. That number is a ceiling, not a check. Many families never apply because Social Security looks too high or the first number looks too small. If you do nothing, that money stays with the VA. There's also a second Aid and Attendance with no income test, and most families never hear about it.
What we cover:
The headline - up to $29,093 a year for a veteran alone, and a 3.6% raise coming December 1
What it is - an add-on to the tax-free Veterans Pension, basic $17,441 versus Aid and Attendance $29,093
Number 1: How the payment is figured - the $29,093 ceiling minus countable income, so $1,800 a month of Social Security leaves about $624 a month
Number 2: Who qualifies - 90 days with 1 wartime day if service began before September 8, 1980, or 24 months after that
The care bill rule - unreimbursed medical costs above $872 come off your income, including a paid caregiver and assisted living
Otis's story - $48,000 a year in care wiped out his countable income, from about $624 to about $2,424 a month
Number 3: The net worth trap - the $163,699 line and what the VA counts
The 3-year look-back - the penalty is divided by $2,874, so $28,740 too much means 10 months with nothing
Randy's story - a $6,000 seminar fee skipped after a free visit to the county veterans office
Number 4: Your to-do list - VA Form 21P-527EZ, VA Form 21-2680, and the nursing home form
Intent to file - it sets your start date, and you get up to a year to finish
If you're married - $34,488 with one dependent, $46,143 for two veterans who both need it
The one I saved: SMC-L - $4,900.83 a month, about $58,810 a year, no income or net worth limit
Kurt's story - rated 100%, moved up to SMC-L for about $962 more every month
Pension or compensation - you pick one and can change your choice later

The VA benefits line is 800-827-1000. An accredited veteran service officer at your county veterans office, the DAV, the VFW or the American Legion will help you file for free. Never pay anyone a cut of your benefit, and never pay anyone to move your savings around.
This is general education about how Aid and Attendance and Special Monthly Compensation work, not advice about your own claim. Your own dates and numbers are what count, so check them with a VSO or the VA.
