Farrah Fawcett Died That Morning. Hours Later, the World Was Looking Somewhere Else.

On the morning of June twenty-fifth, two thousand nine, Farrah Fawcett died in Santa Monica. She was sixty-two. For a few hours it was the story of the day. Then, that same afternoon, Michael Jackson died a few miles away, and the coverage turned and never turned back. She had been the news for five hours. The obituaries written that morning had already decided what she would be remembered for. A television series she walked away from after a single season. And a photograph of a young woman in a red swimsuit on a striped blanket. What almost none of them had room for was the thirty years in between. She left Charlie's Angels at the height of it, and the producers sued rather than let her go — the fight was over who got paid for her face. She spent the next two decades taking parts nobody expected her to want: a battered wife, a woman fighting for her life in her own living room, a mother on trial. She was nominated for Emmy Awards. She was laughed at on late-night television. And at the very end, she picked up a camera and made a film about her own illness, with her name on it as a producer. For one year, an entire country knew exactly what she looked like. This is the story of what she did with the rest of her life. Thank you for watching all the way to the end.
