The prime rate rose to 7% on Sept 17, 2026, the day after the Fed's hike (WSJ prime; first increase since July 2023). Here are the 4 ways a Fed rate hike reaches a business, in order, and how AI can map your exposure in an afternoon.

YOUR AI PLAN (checklist)
✅ Goal: no rate move surprises your cash in the next 12 months
✅ Objective: a one-page rate-sensitivity sheet (every variable-rate debt + top 3 rate-sensitive customer groups), done by Fri, Oct 30
✅ AI use: give an AI assistant your loan statements; ask for each payment at today's prime, +0.5 and +1.0, and the month each change hits
✅ Owner: one named person (owner or bookkeeper)
✅ First task: gather every loan and line statement by Fri, Oct 23; check one AI-calculated row by hand against the lender's statement
✅ Measure: sheet done by Oct 30; one decision logged by Nov 15 (fix, refinance, pay down or hold)
✅ Stays human: the decision, the banker conversation, and how much risk you're willing to carry
KEY NUMBERS (as of mid-October 2026)
• Fed target range 3.75%-4.00% after a 1/4-point hike on Sept 16, 2026 (vote 12-0). Next FOMC meeting: Oct 27-28.
• Fed staff estimate: PCE inflation 3.8% in August (core 3.4%). Most officials said another hike would "likely" be appropriate by year-end - a forecast, not a decision.
• CPI: +3.7% year over year in September 2026.
• WSJ prime rate: 7.00% since Sept 17, 2026 (6.75% before the hike; first increase since July 2023). Prime was 3.25% in 2021 (historical).
• NFIB: average rate on short-term small-business loans 8.2% (September 2026).
• 10-year Treasury 5.19% and 3-month T-bill 4.28% (Oct 14, 2026).
• Fed Gov. Lisa Cook (Sept 28, 2026), citing the Fed's Small Business Credit Survey: nearly half of small employer firms use AI; 71% of them report increased productivity. Her forecast: AI may bring "modest disinflation within the next few years" - not in time to offset today's price pressure.
• Worked examples ($150,000 line of credit; $100,000 project) are illustrative. The 10% discount / 8% riskless rates are from an MBA capital-budgeting course template (historical, c. 2004-2013).
