Storm Austen, the first named storm of the 2026/27 season, is heading for the British Isles and northwest France. The Met Office has issued an amber wind warning for Cornwall, Devon, Plymouth and the Isles of Scilly from 3 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Friday 23 October, warning that injuries and danger to life are likely from large waves and beach material thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and properties.
Forecasters expect Austen to deepen explosively on Thursday, with its pressure forecast to fall by at least 24 hPa in 24 hours. A yellow wind warning covers southern England from Kent to Cornwall and much of south and mid Wales, with gusts of 50–60 mph widely and over 70 mph on exposed coasts. Met Éireann has orange rain warnings for Cork, Kerry, Waterford, Dublin, Wexford and Wicklow, and a storm force 10 marine warning. Scotland is under a yellow rain warning from Friday morning into Saturday, with 20–40 mm widely and up to 60–80 mm in places.
In France, gusts of up to around 150 km/h are forecast on Brittany's headlands, and an orange alert is considered probable for the Manche department. A second, possibly deeper low could follow at the weekend.
