The alarm goes off at 4 AM, and we're headed to the Charlestown Breachway in Rhode Island. It's still dark when I arrive, and I make my way down the jetty by headlamp, looking for my spot before the sun comes up. As daylight breaks over the water, it's time to put the bucktails to work! After some recent success fishing the Breachway, bucktails are my first choice again. This trip, I'm fishing my St. Croix Mojo Inshore rod paired with a Van Staal VR125 reel. Lessons from recent trips have also taught me that bumping up to 40 lb braid and a heavier leader is a better choice when dealing with the current and rocky structure on the outgoing tide. I'm working bucktails ranging from 3/4 oz to 1 1/2 oz, tipped with Berkley Gulp trailers. The results come quickly, with the striped bass turning on in a short but exciting 45-minute window immediately following sunrise! Fishing from the jetty presents its own challenges, especially when it comes to safely releasing fish. We do our best to make each release as quick as possible, minimizing handling time and getting the fish back into the water promptly. The rocks, current, and limited access make this an especially challenging part of fishing the Breachway. Join us for another early-morning Rhode Island fishing adventure at the Charlestown Breachway. Sometimes getting up at 4 AM is exactly what it takes!
