The Breck Bednar Case: The Danger Behind the Screen

On 17 February 2014, 14-year-old Breck Bednar was murdered by Lewis Daynes, a man he had met through online gaming. But Breck’s story began long before that night. In this video, I take an in-depth look at the Breck Bednar case: how Breck came into contact with Daynes, the online relationship that developed, the concerns raised by his mother Lorin LaFave, the warnings and opportunities to intervene, Breck’s journey to Grays, the investigation that followed, and the questions that still surround parts of the case. I also look at what was known about Lewis Daynes before Breck’s murder and how the case became an important warning about online grooming and the dangers that can exist behind seemingly ordinary online friendships. This video discusses the murder of a child, online grooming, sexual themes and other distressing material. Viewer discretion is advised. Breck was just 14 years old. His family established the Breck Foundation in his memory, working to help young people stay safer online and encouraging everyone to: Play Virtual. Live Real.
