2 monarchs eclose/from chrysalis to butterfly

When a monarch butterfly emerges from its chrysalis, its proboscis is split into two separate, matching C-shaped halves. The newly emerged butterfly must curl and uncurl these two halves repeatedly, "zipping" them together to form a single, functional feeding tube. The abdomen is very large and swollen because it is filled with body fluid called hemolymph. The butterfly hangs upside down and rhythmically pumps this fluid out of its abdomen and into the veins of its small, crumpled wings to expand them to their full size.
