DOMINICA ADVENTURE | Cabrits National Park & Fort Shirley History Meets Nature!

Established in 1986, Cabrits National Park occupies 1,313 acres and is best known as the site of Fort Shirley a large 18th century British garrison that once housed 600 soldiers. The park protects tropical forests, coral reefs and wetlands on a stunning peninsula just north of Portsmouth. Fort Shirley is considered Dominica’s most important historic site and was the scene of the famous revolt of the 8th West India Regiment in 1802, when African slave soldiers took over the garrison for three days in protest an action that resulted in all slave soldiers in the British Empire being made free in 1807. The main fort is perched at an elevation of 430 feet, offering visitors stunning panoramic views of Prince Rupert Bay and the surrounding tropical forests. The fort features well preserved stone barracks, officer quarters, and cannon placements.
