You Are Entitled to Shalom: Peace and the Holy Spirit | John 20:19-23

This sermon looks at how the risen Jesus appears to his frightened disciples, offers them peace, and gives them the Holy Spirit. It explains what "peace be with you" meant as shalom, a deep sense of well-being and of being where God made you to be, and how Jesus' breath on his disciples echoes Adam in Genesis and the dry bones in Ezekiel. It also works through the puzzling words about forgiving sins and the call to go and tell others the gospel. The message asks listeners to remember that, as followers of Jesus, they are entitled to shalom, and to move away from anxiety toward trusting the Lord. It also reminds Christians that the Spirit lives in them and helps in three ways: bringing understanding of Scripture, convicting of sin, and helping them pray, even when they feel they have no words.
