Could the next global crisis begin on your dinner plate? External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has warned of a possible major food crisis in the coming months. But the problem may not be a simple food shortage. Disruptions to fertilizer supplies, rising energy costs, geopolitical conflicts, and international trade restrictions could make food more expensive and harder to access.
This video explores how fertilizer shortages affect farmers, how conflicts around critical shipping routes can raise agricultural costs, and how rising oil prices can also influence food production through biofuels. It also examines India’s food security, including its grain reserves and dependence on imported pulses and edible oils. Even when food is available, rising prices can make a nutritious diet unaffordable for many families.
India has significant food stocks and domestic agricultural production, so a global food crisis does not automatically mean that the country will run out of food. The bigger question is whether India’s food system can absorb multiple shocks without prices becoming unaffordable. Could the next food crisis become an economic, political, and national security challenge? Watch the full video and share your views in the comments.
