We have talked about the layout and planning of Lucknow in the previous video (   • Lucknow is getting the basics right - and ...   ). But, there is more. Lucknow is an old city. Not as old as many of the Indian cities. But she has integrated her heritage into the daily lives of the people; not as dead history isolated with gardens. The city has used many ways to do so. And all that brings a unique sense of place for anyone in the city. A sense of place is essential to walkable neighborhoods. Even if walking were safe and convenient, you may not want to do it everyday if it feels boring and out of place. Urbanists such as Jeff Specks have considered the sense of a place among the key factors for a good livable and walkable city. Unfortunately, in modern car-centric architecture - where places are built with primarily with functionality and cost considerations - the sense of place does not get a priority. In this video we will talk about why the sense of a place is important, and how Lucknow is maintaining it.
