Philippines Finds Uranium — Can It Actually Influence Deterrence Against China?

The Philippines has identified uranium-bearing material in Camarines Norte as Manila simultaneously moves forward with plans for nuclear power, including a target of at least 1,200 MW of nuclear capacity by 2032. But this is not a story about the Philippines suddenly gaining a nuclear weapon or a new military deterrent against China. The real question is whether further exploration could prove the resource commercially viable and eventually contribute to Philippine energy security. In this video, we examine what researchers actually discovered, why the jump from 244 ppm to 305 ppm matters, the enormous gap between uranium mineralization and nuclear fuel, Manila’s emerging nuclear program, and how greater energy resilience could eventually support the Philippines’ wider national and strategic resilience in the South China Sea. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 00:00 — Philippines Finds Uranium: Why It Matters 01:35 — What Did the Philippines Actually Find? 03:35 — From 244 PPM to 305 PPM 05:20 — Philippines’ Nuclear Power Plans 07:05 — Could Uranium Improve Energy Security? 09:05 — Why Energy Matters in a South China Sea Crisis 11:10 — Philippines’ Wider Deterrence Strategy 13:05 — Manila’s Growing Security Partnerships 14:50 — The Biggest Problem: The Nuclear Fuel Cycle 17:00 — How Much Uranium Is Actually There? 19:20 — What Happens Next?
