Two Time Breast Cancer Survivor Maria | Pain 2 Power Ep 20

"How long do you not wanna have cancer?" That was her doctor's answer when Maria asked how long she had to keep getting MRIs. Dr. Dave Kashuba's cousin Maria joins Dave and Mike McGann from Buffalo for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and she has been diagnosed with breast cancer twice. The first time, in 2015, a yearly mammogram found stage zero lobular carcinoma in situ, followed by five years of tamoxifen. Because of that diagnosis she was screened every six months at Roswell Park, and in 2024 an MRI caught a stage one cancer early. Maria walks through the lumpectomy, eight rounds of chemotherapy that started on her birthday, five weeks of radiation, and ringing the bell after both. She also talks about the people she met in the radiation waiting room, why she left most online support groups and stayed away from Dr. Google, the women under 40 she met who were already diagnosed, why you cannot always feel a tumor yourself, and the night she asked the universe whether she would be okay.
