A story keeps going around: in 2019, scientists released 5,000 bison onto 150,000 acres of dead Texas scrub, and two years later NASA satellites flagged the recovery as an error. We went looking for that herd. In 1940, the entire United States and Alaska held just over 5,000 bison. Texas had 100.
The Texas story didn't happen. But almost every piece of it points at something that did. The last southern plains bison herd at Caprock Canyons, given a 99% chance of extinction in 2004. A 29-year experiment in Kansas where bison more than doubled native plant diversity. Wallows that reopened after a century. And real satellites in Yellowstone, watching about 5,000 bison engineer the spring green-up.
In this episode: mesquite and the "green glacier," the Goodnight herd and the 2003 genetic rescue, the Konza Prairie bison-vs-cattle results, fire and the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, what wallows really do, the Yellowstone green-wave study and the fight over wolves and rivers, the carbon claims checked, brucellosis and tribal bison transfers, and four questions to run on the next viral nature story.
