A thousand men make their last stand, A frozen hell, a hostile land. The Meuse before, the rebel fleet, No path to march, no food to eat. The flooded fields have sealed their fate, Five thousand souls await the blade. The banners shake, the heavens cry, Yet none shall kneel, yet none shall die. The pikes are raised, the drums resound, A frozen road, a sacred ground. The miracle of Empel! Fire in the frozen night! The tercios had arisen! With faith and steel, the fight! The miracle of Empel! Let thunder shake the sky! No river, fleet or enemy Shall see their banners die! In mud and ice, a soldier digs, No grave to hide, no strength to give. Beneath the earth, a sacred face, The Mother of God, a sign of grace. Then northern winds begin to roar, And frost descends upon the shore. The waters freeze, the ice grows wide, The Meuse becomes their road to fight! Immaculata Conceptio Immaculata Conceptio Immaculata Conceptio Immaculata Conceptio Empel! Empel! 8th of December, 1585. Immaculata Conceptio! Our faith, our hope, our battle cry! Remember the miracle of Empel! ======= Historical Background ======== In December 1585, during the Eighty Years’ War (1568–1648), in which Catholic Spain fought against the Protestant Dutch rebels seeking independence from the Spanish Crown, Spanish Tercios commanded by Francisco de Bobadilla found themselves surrounded on the island of Bommel, with defeat seemingly inevitable. As the soldiers prayed before an image of the Immaculate Conception discovered buried in the earth, a sudden frost froze the surrounding waters, allowing the Spanish troops to cross the ice and defeat the Dutch fleet. This extraordinary event became known as the Miracle of Empel, strengthening the devotion of the Spanish Infantry to the Virgin Mary, later proclaimed its Patroness. An example of faith and victory against all odds. ========== Follow MORION ========== Production note: Morion is an independent AI-assisted music project inspired by a passion for epic metal and history.
