Does light actually travel? We usually say something leaves a star, flies across space, and lands in your eye. Physics says that story is wrong, and the truth is much stranger. Light doesn't follow one path from here to there. In a real, testable sense, it explores every possible path at once, and what we see is what's left after all those possibilities add up and cancel out. In this calm, step-by-step physics explainer, told in simple words anyone can follow, we start with ripples on a pond and the wave that sweeps around a stadium while every person stays in their seat. That leads to Maxwell's discovery that light is a pattern moving through the electromagnetic field, and to Einstein's photons, which arrive one click at a time. With the single-photon double-slit experiment, we see why the question "which slit did it go through?" has no answer until something checks. Then we go back more than 2,000 years to an old puzzle. Hero of Alexandria and Pierre de Fermat found that light always seems to take the quickest route, but how could light know which route is quickest? Richard Feynman's sum over paths answers the question with nothing more than tiny spinning arrows. We see how the "wrong" paths become visible in the rainbow shimmer on a CD, and why a lens is really a machine for making every path agree. Finally, we explore John Wheeler's "great smoky dragon," the delayed choice experiment carried out with single photons in France in 2007, why the spacetime interval along a light ray is exactly zero, and how lasers bounced off the Apollo 11 reflectors show light's very real delay. That brings us to a better way to think about light: a connection between two events, with no single story in between. If you've ever wondered what light is really doing between a star and your eye, this video is for you.
