Do We Actually Know What’s Inside the Nucleus?
Do we actually know what's inside the nucleus? Almost all of your body's mass sits in tiny specks at the centers of your atoms. They're so small that if you packed together only the nuclei of every person on Earth, the whole human race would fit into something about the size of a sugar cube. No microscope has ever seen inside one, yet we've learned an enormous amount by firing particles at them and studying what comes back out.
In this calm, step-by-step physics explainer, told in simple words anyone can follow, we start with Rutherford's gold foil experiment and the shocking discovery that atoms are mostly empty space. We follow the hunt for the proton and the neutron and ask how the nucleus holds together when its protons push each other apart. That leads to the strong force, the liquid drop model, nuclear fission, and the mysterious magic numbers explained by the nuclear shell model.
Then we go one layer deeper, to quarks and gluons. We look at why no one has ever seen a single quark on its own, and how quantum chromodynamics describes the force that locks them inside protons. We also cover the surprising fact that about 99% of a proton's mass comes from energy rather than from the quarks themselves.
Finally, we explore the mysteries that are still open today: the proton spin puzzle, the proton radius puzzle, the neutron lifetime disagreement, the EMC effect, the neutron skin of lead-208, halo nuclei, the island of stability, and what lies at the heart of neutron stars. Along the way we see how nuclei power the Sun, where the gold on Earth came from, and why the protons inside you are older than the Earth itself.
