Rwanda is emerging as the leading candidate to bring Formula 1 back to Africa after a 37-year absence from the continent. Reports citing well-placed Formula 1 paddock sources indicate that an agreement has been reached for Rwanda to host a Grand Prix in 2030. A new permanent racing circuit is expected to be constructed in Bugesera, near Nyamata and the new international airport, approximately 40 kilometres from Kigali. The proposed circuit is being designed by WurzDesign, the company founded by former Formula 1 driver Alexander Wurz. Preliminary plans describe a fast and flowing track that would incorporate Bugesera’s natural landscape. President Paul Kagame officially announced Rwanda’s Formula 1 bid during the FIA General Assemblies held in Kigali in December 2024. Since then, Rwanda has continued discussions with Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali and FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
