The actual Japanese word is older, smaller, and never mentions money. Ikigai is iki (to live) plus kai - a word meaning the return you get back for what you spent.
Not a destination to locate, but what comes back after you act. We trace
kai to a thousand-year-old verb meaning "to exchange," look at what Japanese people actually name as their ikigai, and close the series with the one word that survives the failing and the letting go.
