Every week there is a new headline about AI and jobs. But people have asked this question before. This video looks at what happened when wide knitting frames came to Nottinghamshire in 1811 (and who the Luddites really were), why the number of US bank tellers grew after cash machines arrived, and how spreadsheets cut bookkeeping clerks but created far more accountants. Then it looks at the evidence on AI so far: a study of more than 5,000 customer support agents, where AI helped beginners most, an experiment on writing tasks, Stanford's early warning signs for young workers, and the IMF and World Economic Forum forecasts. It ends with practical ideas for what you can do.

A note on facts: the Stanford figure is a relative decline (13% in the first draft, 16% in a later revision) for workers aged 22 to 25 in the most AI-exposed jobs, and the authors call it an early warning, not proof. The IMF's "exposed" means AI could affect the job, not that it will be lost. The WEF numbers are employers' expectations for all kinds of change by 2030, not AI alone. Leah is an illustrative character based on the setting of the customer-support study, not a real person.
