About the Song
Sing! Psalms is a Scripture-song series that seeks to transform the Psalms into original, singable lyrics while preserving the meaning, structure, imagery, and message of each biblical text. Rather than reproducing a Bible translation word-for-word, the goal is to communicate the same biblical truths through poetic language suitable for worship, meditation, memorisation, and personal devotion.
This adaptation of Psalm 24 was developed through a close study of the psalm's majestic structure and royal imagery. Psalm 24 is often regarded as a Kingship Psalm, proclaiming God's absolute ownership over creation, describing the character of those who may approach Him, and culminating in the triumphant arrival of the King of Glory.
The psalm unfolds like a grand procession. It begins with God's rule over the world, moves to the question of who may enter His presence, and concludes with a victorious celebration of the King Himself. The song follows that progression closely while preserving the psalm's themes of sovereignty, holiness, worship, and divine kingship.
Structure of Psalm 24
1. The Lord's Ownership of Creation (Psalm 24:1-2)
The psalm begins with a sweeping declaration:
"The earth is the Lord's."
Everything belongs to Him because He created and established it. The world, its people, and all creation exist under His authority.
This section forms Verse 1, emphasising God's sovereignty over the earth, the nations, the seas, and the heavens.
The opening establishes an important truth that governs the rest of the psalm: God has the right to rule because He is Creator of all things.
2. The Question of Worthiness (Psalm 24:3-6)
After declaring God's greatness, the psalm asks a vital question:
Who can approach God's holy presence?
The answer points not to status, power, or wealth, but to purity, integrity, and faithfulness.
Those who seek God sincerely are described as having:
Clean hands.
Pure hearts.
Truthfulness.
Faithfulness.
This section is reflected in Verse 2 and the recurring Chorus, where the focus shifts from God's greatness to the character of those who desire to draw near to Him.
3. The Arrival of the King of Glory (Psalm 24:7-10)
The final section presents one of the most dramatic scenes in the Psalms.
The gates are commanded to lift up their heads and the ancient doors are called upon to open wide. The reason is clear:
The King of Glory is coming.
The psalm then asks and answers the question:
"Who is this King of Glory?"
The answer celebrates God's power, majesty, and victorious reign.
This section forms the heart of the Bridge, Verse 3, and Final Chorus, preserving the psalm's triumphant call for the gates to welcome the King.
